Functions: To conduct scientific research and technology development in the fields of surface treatment and thermal spraying.

Mandates:

  • To research, develop, and manufacture materials and technologies in the areas of surface treatment and thermal spraying;
  • To research and synthesize materials for application across industrial and civil sectors;
  • To investigate the impact of tropical climates on the properties and performance of materials and thermal spraying;
  • To test and evaluate the durability of materials and coatings within the framework of tropical technology;
  • To engage in training, international cooperation, application deployment, standards development, consulting, and technology transfer in the fields of tropical technology and thermal spraying;
  • To provide other related scientific and technological services;
  • To perform other duties as assigned by the Director.

Principal Research Directions

  • Research and development of thermal spray coatings for corrosion protection in chemical, atmospheric, and marine environments;
  • Research and development of functional thermal spray coatings (including restoration, heat resistance, thermal insulation, wear and erosion resistance, and decorative purposes…);
  • Research into advanced surface-treatment technologies in line with global development trends.

MAJOR ACHIEVEMENTS

  • Completed the technology for producing nickel–chromium alloy coatings using electric arc spray technology to enhance wear and corrosion resistance of industrial machine components operating in harsh environments.
  • Researched and developed Cr₃C₂–NiCr coatings with corrosion and wear resistance using plasma spray technology to restore and improve the surface quality of turbine runner wheels in hydroelectric plants in Lao Cai.
  • Researched and developed Cr₃C₂–25NiCr coatings using plasma spray technology for application in restoring and extending the service life of components in thermal power plants.
  • Fabricated and studied the structure and properties of Al₂O₃–TiO₂ composite ceramic coatings containing nano-sized alumina particles.
  • Researched and developed several advanced inorganic coatings for applications in both civilian and defense sectors.
